Bats are among the few mammals that do not build their shelter.
Bat roosts can be found in:
Caves
Any cavity naturally developed in rocks, generally soluble, from several meters to hundreds of miles is a cave.
The areas where bats have their roost are not situated far from the entrance of a cave but there are also exceptions (At Sura Mare Cave bats were present at about 2 kilometers from the entrance).
Generally bats prefer caves upward, with one opening, crossed by rivers. Galleries trap warm air upward, and the water provides the optimum humidity in the bat roosts
Forest Roosts
Bats in the warm area of the world occupy different parts of the tree – they cling to the stem, the branches, between leavesand between roots. In temperate areas, they prefer the old tree hollows
Artificial Roosts
In the absence of caves man-made
shelters are preferred. They are different, depending on the geographic area
and construction features.
What they have in common is that
they are far from anthropogenic sources of noise and light.
Wells and underground silos,
abandoned mining galleries, barns, cellars, bridges, buildings, religious
buildings (temples, arches, bell towers) have these features.
Sometimes bats can accommodate very
tight places such as cracks in walls.
